Boehner, GOP Sends a Message to the President: Hands Off the Web

  • GOP lawmakers tell Obama they don't like broadband reclassification: "Republican lawmakers on Wednesday wrote a letter to President Obama, protesting a move by the Federal Communications Commission to assert its authority over broadband service providers. ... 'To help expedite our recovery and create jobs, we urged you to refocus the Commission on promoting broadband investment and deployment,' they wrote." (Washington Post, 5/12/10)
  • Top House GOPers urge president to reverse FCC course on broadband: Both Boehner and Cantor predicted that approach would only stifle investment in a sector of the economy that has recently posted strong gains. 'With nearly 10 percent unemployment the new 'network neutrality' plan announced last week by the [FCC] could hardly come at a worse time for our nation's economy, which is already struggling against a steady flow of increased government spending and taxation from Washington.'" (The Hill, 5/12/10)
  • House GOP Leaders Urge Obama To Block FCC Move: "'We are writing to respectfully urge immediate reconsideration of your administration's plan for federal regulation of the Internet, and to warn that implementation of such a plan will needlessly inhibit the creation of American private sector jobs, limit economic freedom and innovation, and open the door to Internet taxation,' Boehner and Cantor wrote." (National Journal, 5/12/10)
