Democrats Deserting Obama, Opposing Tax Hikes on Small Businesses

While the White House was busy Tweeting about GOP Leader John Boehner, something happened: a bunch of House Democrats started balking at President Obama's plan to raise taxes on small businesses. Here are some of their actual quotes:

>> "Many of the taxpayers included in this 'upper-income' bracket are successful small business owners … Now is not the time to raise taxes on anyone." (Washington Times, 9/15/10)

>> "We should not be raising taxes in the middle of a recession…" (AP, 9/15/10)

>> "[T]he economy has by no means recovered so my bias is that those high-end tax cuts should be extended…" (National Journal, 9/14/10)

>> "It is essential that we keep things as they are in the short term…" (AP, 9/15/10)

>> Another Democrat "says the majority in his district "don't believe in tax increases on anybody at this point in time." (Human Events, 9/15/10)

Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) also "signaled a willingness to cross the party line — and break with Mr. Obama — as Congress struggles to" stop the Obama tax hikes on small businesses.

Even Obama's former budget director admits that raising taxes right now will make our unemployment problem even worse than it's already been under Democratic leadership.

Keep in mind that these are Democrats… the party that gave us a trillion-dollar "stimulus" that didn't work; that imposed ObamaCare and all of its taxes, mandates, and penalties; who still want to pass a "cap and trade" national energy tax; and who flatly refused to end taxpayer-funded bailouts.

Nevertheless, the bipartisan support is there for freezing all current rates so we can end some of the uncertainty facing private sector employers. That's why Republican Leader John Boehner is calling on Speaker Pelosi to allow that up-or-down vote on stopping all the tax hikes.

"Anything less is unacceptable," Boehner said. "If the Speaker allows an up-or-down vote, we're confident our plan to stop all the tax hikes will pass."
