The Daily reported this week that Washington Democrats’ dishonest Mediscare attacks on House Republican candidates and challengers have fallen flat, thanks to a GOP message machine that was prepared to go on offense and defend their plan to save and strengthen Medicare:
“If Republicans manage to avoid drowning in Medicare attacks for the remaining 40 days of the campaign, they’ll owe it partly to House GOP strategists who spent hours on end last year trying to make sure Paul Ryan’s budget plan didn't doom the party....
“The gains are largely credited to the National Republican Congressional Committee, the campaign arm of House Republicans, which engineered a messaging shift from urging Medicare ‘reform’ to vowing to ‘preserve and protect’ it....
“More than a year ago, the NRCC began testing different messages in congressional special elections in New York and Nevada — with Ryan himself serving as a willing participant. By the time Ryan was picked, the lessons of those special elections — one lost, one won — had been absorbed by Washington Republicans as a whole, and the way Romney and Ryan talked about Medicare on the campaign trail was practically carbon-copied from the NRCC’s findings....
