"A Wise Choice”: What House Republicans Are Saying About Romney’s Selection of Paul Ryan for VP

On Saturday, Governor Mitt Romney selected House Budget Chair Paul Ryan as his running mate and nominee for vice president.  Speaker Boehner praised Romney for his choice, citing his work as a “reformer and a proven leader who will be a great partner to Governor Romney in his efforts to get our country, and our economy, back on track.”  House Republicans and challengers across the nation continue to speak out in support of Governor Romney’s selection of Congressman Ryan.

Included below are reactions to the choice:

Speaker John Boehner: “I couldn't be happier for Paul, and I think Mitt Romney made a brave choice and a wise choice.  Paul Ryan understands that the central issue that we have to deal with is our economy.  There's nobody that knows more about pro-growth economic policies than Paul Ryan.  And then when it comes to dealing with our debt crisis, probably nobody worked harder to develop policies to deal with our debt crisis than Paul Ryan.”

Congressman Bill Johnson (OH-6): “Having served with Paul in the House, I know how committed he is to confronting and solving the very real fiscal and economic challenges that America faces. Paul has not been afraid to lead on difficult issues — a quality sorely lacking in the current Administration. The House’s loss of Paul Ryan as the chairman of the budget committee will be America’s gain in helping Gov. Romney address our crippling debt, put Americans back to work and move our nation forward. I applaud Gov. Romney in making an excellent choice for America’s next vice president.”

Congressman Jon Runyan (NJ-3): “During my brief time in Congress, I have seen firsthand what a smart, serious and solutions-oriented leader Paul Ryan is and I am proud to call him my friend. Governor Romney knows that we cannot continue down the irresponsible path of raising taxes on working families, small businesses and seniors to pay for the runaway spending and borrowing of career politicians in Washington.  I strongly support his decision to pick Congressman Ryan and look forward to working with them to end business as usual in Washington and bring about the economic and fiscal reforms we need to create jobs and balance the budget.”

Challenger Ann Wagner (MO-02): “[Paul Ryan is] going to add energy to this ticket – it’s exciting.  We’re going to have a substantive discussion about cutting our spending, about reining in government and making some of the adult decisions that need to be made as we go forward [with] our budget.”

Congressman Steve Pearce (NM-02): “Paul Ryan has been a consistent conservative voice in the US House of Representatives. Unlike President Obama and Washington Democrats, Congressman Ryan has put forward bold, concrete ideas to balance our nation’s budget and get our economy working again. As New Mexican families continue to struggle in this Obama economy, I know they want to hear about solutions and not personal attacks.”

Challenger Brad Wenstrup (OH-02): “Congratulations to Representative Paul Ryan on the VP nod. He brings bold and creative solutions that will help solve our financial crisis and start paying down our record debt.”

Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (WI-05): “Governor Romney is committed to getting our country back on track, and the Romney-Ryan team will offer the leadership this country has been craving. Paul is an individual of unquestionable character, and his vision and leadership will be tremendous assets to the ticket, and ultimately, for America.”

If you stand with Speaker Boehner in his commitment to “do everything in [his] power to make sure that [Congressman Ryan] and Mitt Romney - along with our entire Republican ticket - are well positioned to win in November,” support the Freedom Project today.
